This module has been developed to help support staff understand and respond to falls risks in older people. Using the Aged Care Quality Standards, it guides staff to use best practice in assessing falls risk, ensuring the environment is safe, and introducing strategies and interventions to reduce falls risk. It has a focus on helping older people to maintain maximum independence, and following the law in relation to least restrictive interventions.

  • To explain common factors in the person and the environment that lead to increased falls risk
  • To identify the requirements of the aged care quality standards and the aged care act 1997 in terms of managing risk and using restrictive practices
  • To explain who must be included in a falls risk assessment, and how and when the assessment is undertaken
  • To identify a range of ways to reduce falls risk in the environment
  • To identify a range of non- restrictive strategies and aids to help the person reduce their risk of falls
  • To explain restrictive interventions, and identify the conditions under which least restrictive interventions are permitted
  • To describe how they would respond, report and document a fall in an older person
