Diabetes Mellitus is a chronic illness that is becoming increasingly common in Australia. A disease of the endocrine system, diabetes can have a significant impact on the overall health and wellbeing of participants.

Having general knowledge of this condition will assist support workers to understand the person’s needs and provide appropriate support.

This module provides general information about diabetes only. It does not provide information or training in medication management.

Learning Objectives:

  • Understand diabetes
  • Get an overview of medications to manage diabetes
  • Provide holistic care to a participant with diabetes
  • Recognise and manage diabetic emergencies
