The Aged Care Quality Standards and Antimicrobial Stewardship

This module has been developed for nursing and personal care workers in residential aged care, particularly those who assist with or administer medications to residents.
It aims to provide a level of awareness that meets the requirements of the Aged Care Quality Standards 3 and 8 in relation to antimicrobial stewardship.
It provides an understanding of the importance of safe antibiotic use and infection control in reducing the impact of antimicrobial resistance on residents and the general community.
It outlines practical examples of how staff can practice and monitor antimicrobial stewardship in their everyday work, including in relation to urinary tract infections.

 

Learning Outcomes:

  • Define the terms antimicrobial, antibiotics and antimicrobial stewardship in an aged care context
  • Explain the threat posed to the health of the Australian and worldwide community by resistance to antibiotics
  • Outline the factors that lead to antimicrobial resistance in aged care settings
  • Identify the requirements of the Aged Care Quality Standards in relation to antimicrobial stewardship
  • List strategies that should be followed in aged care in order to comply with recommended and regulated antibiotic prescription and use
  • List measures that reduce the chance of resistant bacteria spread.
  • Outline alternative approaches to urinary tract infections when antibiotic use is not indicated
