Welcome to the Complex Bowel Care (High Intensity Training Series) module.
This module is designed to provide supplementary theory and practice to support workers in disability services who provide or will provide complex bowel care.
By the end of this module, you will be better able to:
- Recall the basic anatomy of the digestive system, and the types of bowel dysfunction that affect some people with disability
- Describe the signs of healthy bowel functioning and the nutrition and toilet habits that support healthy digestion
- Explain the signs and symptoms of bowel complications that require intervention and related conditions such as automatic dysreflexia
- Explain how to observe and record changes in bowel habits
- Follow personal hygiene and infection prevention control procedures
- Identify the different types of bowel stomas, their indications and features, and key pieces of stoma care equipment
- Explain key bowel care procedures including the appropriate use of laxatives, administering suppositories and enemas, and changing ostomy bags
This module offers an introduction to the theory. It is advised that the learner complement this with a practical demonstration.
