Welcome to the Tracheostomy Support (High Intensity Training Series) module.
This module aims to assist support workers to provide safe support to participants requiring a tracheostomy. It is designed to provide supplementary information about tracheostomy care to support workers in disability services who provide or will provide tracheostomy care. It meets the theoretical requirements of the NDIS Practice Standards, and provides a background to practical training.
By the end of this module, you will be better able to:
- Recall the basic anatomy of the respiratory system and tracheostomy equipment types, components and functions
- Identify signs of infection in the respiratory system and the stoma site, signs of obstruction of the airways, and abnormal secretions
- Explain best practices for performing stoma site care, supporting routine tube tie changes, and maintain suctioning equipment
- Describe indications of the need for suctioning and the steps of the suctioning procedure
- Employ emergency procedures to respond to deteriorating health or infection
- Assess common complications to determine action required, including when to involve a health practitioner
This module offers an introduction to the theory. It is advised that the learner complement this with a practical demonstration.
