Welcome to the "Dementia 6: End-of-life Dementia Care" online course.
This online course prepares learners to support people living with dementia who are receiving palliative care or nearing end-of-life. Learners will recognise signs of deterioration, understand the differences between palliative and end-of-life care, and apply practical strategies to promote comfort, dignity and quality of life. The course also explores advance care planning, cultural and spiritual considerations, compassionate support for families and carers, and strategies for maintaining worker wellbeing.

Module 1 of 2:
End-of-life Dementia Care
After completing this module, it is expected that learners will be better able to...
- Recognise that dementia is a life-limiting condition, and that late-stage dementia may mean the person is nearing end of life Distinguish palliative care and end-of-life care
- Recognise common signs that a person may be declining or approaching end of life and when to escalate changes, concerns or signs of deterioration
- Identify factors you can adjust to reduce pain, distress and suffering and support the person's comfort, dignity and quality of life through everyday care within your scope of practice
- Give examples of how you can contribute to safe, calm and meaningful spaces for people living with dementia at end of life
- Express the importance of respecting advance care planning, culture, spirituality and personal wishes
- Demonstrate sensitive communication with families and carers about grief and bereavement within their role Recognise that end-of-life care can affect workers emotionally and seek support when needed
