Welcome to the Workplace Health and Safety for Home Care (Support at Home Series) course.

This course equips frontline Home Care workers with essential knowledge and skills needed to keep themselves and the older people they support safe. 

This course contains 3 modules:

  • (SAH-WHSPR) Workplace Health and Safety Principles for Home Care (approx. 10 mins)
  • (SAH-REME) Keeping Yourself and the People You Support Safe: Responding to Emergencies in Home Care Settings (approx. 35 mins)
  • (SAH-INFP) Meeting Infection Prevention and Control Requirements in Home Care (approx. 30 mins)
To complete this course, you must successfully complete all the modules above.

Module 1 of 3:

Workplace Health and Safety Principles for Home Care

This resource provides the basic information and tools you need to perform your critical role in maintaining the safety of participants, care teams and the home environment by adhering to workplace health and safety principles.

It contains information about:

  • The types of risks and hazards that occur in home environments
  • Safety and the Aged Care Quality Standards
  • Your responsibilities and the responsibilities of your employer in maintaining safe work environments
  • Identifying, assessing, controlling and monitoring/reviewing risks and hazards
  • Where to go for help with health and safety issues

Module 2 of 3:

Keeping Yourself and the People You Support Safe: Responding to Emergencies in Home Care Settings 

After completing this module, you will be better able to:

  • Describe the types of emergencies that can take place in home and community settings
  • Explain how to safely respond to a fire emergency in a participant’s home
  • Explain how to safely respond to aggression and threats to your personal safety
  • Explain how to respond to a medical emergency in a support worker role
  • Outline the main principles of safe emergency response in home care settings

Module 3 of 3:

Meeting Infection Prevention and Control Requirements in Home Care

After completing this module, you will be better able to:

  • Explain how infections spread in home settings, and why infection prevention and control matters for older people receiving support
  • State the standard precautions used every time you provide support, including the 5 Moments for Hand Hygiene
  • Demonstrate hand hygiene, safe glove use, and safe handling and disposal of clinical waste and sharps in a private home setting
  • Identify when to apply transmission-based precautions in the home and select appropriate PPE
  • Outline the correct sequence for putting on and removing PPE and when to dispose of it safely
