Welcome to the Mobility Management in Aged Care – Key Skills (Strengthened Quality Standards Aged Care Series) module.

This module is part of the SQS Program 4: Manual Handling, Mobility and Support

Learning Outcomes:

1. Outline the requirements of the Aged Care Quality Standards in relation to mobility management, including preventing and managing pressure injuries, physical exercise, and basic massage  
2. Explain the importance of physical activity, and its effect on the older person’s mobility and independence. 
3. Identify the risk factors for pressure sores in an older person. 
4. Describe the grades of pressure sores, and the potential consequences for the older person. 
5. Explain best practice in positioning and transferring residents to reduce the risk of injury. 
6. List a range of aids and equipment that can help prevent pressure injuries, their uses, and contraindications. 
7. Recognise the importance of pain management as a part of treating pressure injuries. 
8. Define and provide examples of reablement. 
9. Identify examples of exercise and activity programs for older people in the community and in aged care settings. 
10. Outline adaptions that can be made to improve physical activity for frail older people. 
11. Explain the process for assessing and minimising risk in relation to exercise and activity. 
12. Explain the limitations of massage by untrained workers. 
13. Identify the conditions for which gentle massage is contra-indicated.  
14. Explain the procedure for preparing for a gentle massage. 
15. Describe safe and effective procedures for a gentle massage. 
16. Identify steps to complete and document the massage.
