Safe Use of Heat and Cold Therapy in Aged Care

Pain is thought to be notoriously undermanaged in aged care facilities. Heat therapy is an effective way to help support conditions such as arthritis and muscle stiffness, but it needs to be undertaken with an awareness of contraindications and dangers.  This module is designed to help personal care workers understand the safe use of heat and cold therapy for chronic and acute pain conditions in an older person.   It takes the learner through safe procedures and reporting protocols. It helps the learner to understand the risk of burns and other damage to frail skin and compromised body systems.

Learning Objectives:

  • Identify the benefits of heat and cold therapies
  • Differentiate between the appropriate uses of heat and cold
  • Understand the contraindications and limitations of heat and cold therapies
  • Outline the process for safely applying heat and cold therapies
  • Describe when to report concerns or problems
