Welcome to the Standards and Scope of Practice in Home Care (Support at Home Series) course.
This course builds frontline workers’ understanding of their professional responsibilities, maintaining safe boundaries and working confidently within their scope of practice.
This course contains 2 modules:
- (SAH-ROLE) Home Care Roles and Their Scope of Practice (approx. 10 mins)
- (SAH-DUTY) Duty of Care: Responsibilities and Professional Boundaries for Support Workers (approx. 35 mins)
To complete this course, you must successfully complete all the modules above.
Module 1 of 2:
Home Care Roles and Their Scope of Practice
This resource explains the importance of understanding and working within one’s scope of practice in home care settings. It outlines what different roles are responsible for, how to handle requests that fall outside your scope, and what to do in emergencies.
It contains information about:
- Understanding scope of practice
- Role responsibilities and boundaries
- Using the STAR framework (Stop, Think, Act, Review)
- Managing out-of-scope requests
- Knowing who to contact for support
- Responding to emergencies safely
- Reflecting and reporting after incidents
Module 2 of 2:
Duty of Care: Responsibilities and Professional Boundaries for Support Workers
After completing this module, you will be better able to:
- Define examples of professional boundaries in the support worker role
- Explain the reasons why professional boundaries are in place, and who they benefit
- Describe common examples of issues caused by neglecting professional boundaries
- Explain the role of the support worker in providing participant choice without judgement or control
- Outline appropriate actions when faced with a conflict of interest
